MLO 1 (language)
1.1 Students are able to communicate effectively in Japanese in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational; and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Intermediate-High level of language proficiency, according to the ACTFL Guidelines.
1.2 Students gain competency in the Japanese language and linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and discourse. Students compare, contrast, and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English.
I fulfilled the requirements for MLO 1 by completing nearly all available 300+ level language classes at CSUMB, as well as the more intensive language oriented course at Dokkyo University while on one year study abroad. JAPN 380 and JAPN 300 (1.1)really cemented my Japanese language abilities that I had been developing since my high school study abroad and through them I felt very prepared for my intensive study abroad program at Dokkyo (1.1). I was able to score high enough to enter a challenging JLPT N3 oriented course for my first semester at Dokkyo, which I was able to pass with high marks, followed by a second semester in a course that entered the JLPT N2 level of study. By completing this course I feel very comfortable conversing in Japanese in a wide variety of situations. As far as competency in other linguistic capacities concerning Japanese and English are concerned, the JAPN 401 (1.2) course offered at CSUMB challenged students to not only understand the structure of the Japanese language, but how that might compare to a language like English, and what that means for students of foreign languages much like ourselves. My capstone project also serves as the peak of my Japanese language abilities in literacy and presentational capacities, though I must thank our amazing advising and teaching staff at CSUMB for making such endeavors possible.
Courses:
JAPN 300 - Intro to Advanced Communication
JAPN 401 - Structure of Japanese Language
JAPN 404 - Advanced Japanese Presentation Communication
+ Dokkyo language courses (study abroad)
