MLO 2 (culture)
2.1 Students develop a comprehensive understanding, appreciation, and knowledge of Japanese culture: perspectives (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), practices (patterns of social interactions) and products (both tangible and intangible, for example, art, history, literature, music).
2.2 Students develop analytical and critical thinking in areas such as how Japan’s cultural background influences modern Japanese life, how to compare their own culture with the Japanese culture, or how Japanese culture relates to other world cultures in an age of global inter-relatedness.
The second MLO is comprehensively Japanese culture, the intricacies of that culture, it's history and modern Japanese society. To that effect the classes I have taken at CSUMB have served to educate me on many facets of Japanese history and society, furthermore the classes I took at Dokkyo filled in some intricacies, while the immersive factor of being on study abroad informed me even further and allowed me to interact inter-culturally first-hand (2.1 and 2.2). At Dokkyo I was able to take a few classes concerning Japanese myths and legends (2.1), a class that informed several of my interests that I was able to incorporate in my capstone project (2.2), the culmination of my Japanese studies thus far. Capstone also serves to connect my understanding of what aspects of Japan's cultural background influences Japanese society today and how they may be compared or connected to cultural traditions and beliefs abroad (2.2). It is this MLO in conjunction with the next MLO (3) that fuels my desire to study culture in greater depth.
