JAPN 320S - Advanced Japanese Service Learning
"This course gives students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Japanese language and culture from the perspective of social justice and responsibility through their community service. Students develop advanced level communication skills through discussions, reflection essays, and presentations. Taught in Japanese."
For the Service Learning portion of my degree, my class split into groups of four and were each assigned a different service site - a location to teach an after-school program for children about Japanese language and culture. The assignments below are my writings regarding my particular groups class of children, what we prepared for the children in each lesson as well as our critical thoughts regarding those classes. This class served as an extremely formative experience in teaching, preparing lessons and executing them. We also felt a strong sense of social justice throughout the experience as we were able to teach a largely underprivileged group of children about Japanese culture and formally introduce them to multiculturalism.
Samples:
My presentation on my service learning site in Japanese.
My final essay covering the subject and my experiences in regards to the service learning outcomes.
My responses to the service learning outcomes themselves.
